When is the best time to ask for a raise? Is there really an ideal moment? These questions arise when we find ourselves in that situation. To try to answer them, at Cadena SER they have interviewed our director, Elisa Sánchez .
One of the conversations that usually costs us the most to address is about the increase in salary. UK Biobank carried out an investigation with data from more than 88,000 people and concluded that 11 in the morning and in January is the best time to ask for a salary increase.
That time in the morning is a good time to make decisions and have important conversations because, as Elisa Sánchez, an expert psychologist in Human Resources, explains, we find ourselves energized. «If we have had a good breakfast, we process information better, at 1 we are already hungry, we are tired and it is not a good time».
At the organizational level, «in January there is an evaluation of the performance of the previous year and many times the objectives for the following year are negotiated, so it is a great time to negotiate these issues.» And if it’s a much better Thursday. «Thursday has always been recommended as a good day to make sales, and by asking for a raise you are selling yourself.»
Normally it generates a lot of anxiety to talk and ask for money. «Especially if you link it to you, your performance and your value.» Elisa, who has done ‘coaching’ and has prepared people who wanted to ask for a salary increase, recommends that we prepare it well, argue it, write it, rehearse it and go with confidence. «Also prepare the objections, they don’t always say yes to the first one.»
Elisa emphasizes how important it is to indicate your achievements and your results, and make it clear that «it is not an increase on a whim or by comparison with other people.» The best thing, according to Elisa, is to set a specific meeting to talk about it. It does not matter that the boss prepares it for him, in fact, «if he catches him off guard, he will most likely say no, if he knows, he will prepare his arguments and thus it will be a more balanced negotiation.»
In the case in which the boss tells you no and says that your productivity is bad, we should ask «what is the productivity that is expected of us, and if when we get them he commits to that salary increase». If this does not work either, we always have the option of looking for other benefits, «we must bear in mind that there are moments that are more delicate and there cannot be a salary increase, so we can look for other benefits, a meal bonus, insurance, flexibility in the schedule or more teleworking». That is, look for another element that allows you to save money.
